There are numerous advantages to gain with dental implants. You may be glad to have filled in a gap within your smile, but you now have to focus on the immediate aftercare. Our dentist will provide you with more details about how you should care for your smile after the surgery, but here are some quick tips to bear in mind.
Stick With a Soft Diet
For a day or two after the implant is inserted, you want to stick with soft foods. You also want to remain hydrated and drink plenty of liquids. During this time, you will want to avoid overly cold or hot foods. You should do your best to return to your normal diet as quickly as possible.
Practice Good Oral Hygiene
You should be able to brush and floss after the surgery, but you want to be extremely gentle in the days following the treatment. For as long as you have the implant, you want to continue brushing and flossing every day so that you do not develop an inflammation later in life. After you have healed completely, you should consider investing in a water flosser. It is nearly twice as effective at clearing out debris between teeth. It can also help eliminate stubborn plaque that gets caught.
Manage the Pain
You should expect a little discomfort in the days following the surgery. Our dentist typically recommends taking Tylenol or Ibuprofen. You may also receive a prescription for antibiotics to help prevent infection.
Limit Physical Activities
For a few days after surgery, you should avoid rigorous exercise. If you have a job that requires such activities, then you may need to take a couple days off to recover. Exercising at this time could result in excessive bleeding.
Schedule Follow-Up Appointments
Whether you need to schedule a consultation for dental implants or just need a check-up, call the office of Dr. James Gainer. Our dentists will make sure you get the best care possible, so you can feel confident in your smile.
